Teaching Flute
I do not feel that our brief sojourn here on earth is a time of compromise.
My music—like the Indian music of Ravi
Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan—is based on spiritualism and was practiced in order
to come to know the Supreme Truth.
A musician must lift up the souls of his
listeners and his students and take them upwards and outwards. This is the
history of Indian music, and of my music.
I take pride in each of my students, I thank the Lord who has given them to my tutelage. They are my window to the future, and I delight in whatever I can give them on their journey.
«What we do as performers exists for the moment, but what we do as teachers affects eternity.»
Jane Baxtresser, flutist.

Reference
"Ms. Hidber Dickinson demonstrated right at her trial lesson her sovereign grasp of methodology and technical know-how. Her break-down of the 30-minute lesson (warm-up, breathing technique, embouchure, articulation, intonation, theory, etude, repertoire) was organic, efficient and without stress.
She was most popular with students, parents and colleagues. Her performances in the area will long be remembered. We most regret losing Ms. Hidber, one of the best teachers we've ever had."

Masterclasses
There is so much that I hope to share with my students:
- a love of music
- the knowledge that music is a friend, a friend through the bright peaksand dark valleys of life
- a love of the timeless magic of the flute
- a sence of discipline, carriying for every note we play
- a feeling that we owe – no less than the composer – a profound unhurried dialogue with his works
- a love of the sister arts – poetry, painting, dance, theatre – without music would be much the poorer
Themes for
masterclasses
I addition to
the collected standard repertoire from 1700 to the present I would like to
offer the following themes:
- warm-up posture, breathing, vibrato…
- performance practise of early music (ornamentation, improvisation, agogic, articulation, dance, mesa di voce, repertoire, basso continuo, etc.)
- brazilian music, classical (I have collected hundreds of manuscripts during my extended tours there) and popular (Bossa Nova, Choro, Maxixe, Maracatù, Baiao)
Publications
As a result of my teaching and masterclasses worldwide, many flutists have expressed to me their desire for some publications dealing with tone (intonation, vibrato, coulours), performing, the history and philosophy of flute playing. Feel free to contact Myriam Hidber Dickinson if you would like to receive any of her writings.
